LUMINARIUM IN CONCERT

By Luminarium Dance Company (other events)

2 Dates Through Dec 07, 2019

ABOUT ABOUT

Hailed by the Boston Globe as “unpredictable, provocative, and gratifyingly visceral,” Luminarium Dance Company triumphantly ends its 2019 Season with its feature production LUMINARIUM IN CONCERT—a melding of contemporary, Odissi, and unique lighting that catapults live performance to a whole new level. Venture into Luminarium’s world of movement and light where fanciful animals are brought to life through shadow-play; witness the exhilaration of combat sport beyond the ring; sink into the luscious imagery of a new screendance film; and delight in an amusing and provocative examination of "self," all in a night’s work.

LUMINARIUM IN CONCERT features new works and works-in-progress by Luminarium’s Artistic Directors. NEFA-funded interdisciplinary artist Kimberleigh Holman will show an excerpt from her current project Contradictions + Casual Self Loathing—a humorous, awkward, and poignant window into the female experience. The work will be set inside a light installation of her own creation, full of vintage projectors, classroom overhead projectors, hanging bulbs, and illuminated written text. Holman will also debut the concert version of RING—a physical nod to combat, and exploration of the difference between partner and opponent, fueled by her work as an amateur boxer.

Internationally-showcased filmmaker Merli V. Guerra premieres her newest screendance For you, to mentor me, following a mother-daughter relationship shifting over time, with a multigenerational cast of women ages 4 to 60. Guerra additionally presents two new choreographic works: The first is an artistic abstraction of the "Janus molecule," whose properties are both medicinal and lethal. The second, 8.7 million minus 1, integrates classical Odissi Indian dance, contemporary, and shadow theatre to literally and metaphorically illuminate the effects of human waste and pollution on the planet’s ecosystems, while reminding us of our own contradictory habits.

LUMINARIUM IN CONCERT features live performances by Company Members Jessica Chang, Devon Colton, Melenie Diarbekirian, Merli V. Guerra, Amy Mastrangelo, Katie McGrail, and Jennifer Roberts, and Satellite Company Members Victoria Kreutzer and Karina McKenna, as well as filmed performances by Guest Artists Kristen Antonio, Elias Pacheco, Kylie Pacheco, Jessica Lawson, Wendy Lawson, and Violet Lawson-Ball.
